Savory Kale Pie, Vegan + Gluten-Free

Today’s recipe is a kitchen experiment that resulted in something between a pizza and a tart. I’m not quite sure how else to classify this Savory Kale Pie but trust me, it’s delicious! My boyfriend recently made Vegan Lobster Bisque (I totally recommend the recipe!) and we enjoyed slices of kale pie on the side.

We drizzled tahini on top, which added a really nice flavor. Next time I think I’ll sprinkle nutritional yeast on top as well.

Savory Kale Pie

makes 2 large or 4 small servings

What you’ll need:

for the crust

  • 3/4 cup GF All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tbs vegan margine
  • 1 tbs non-dairy milk
  • dash of salt

for the filling

  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic,
  • 3 cups chopped kale
  • 1 tbs tamari
  • dash of salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Prepare crust by mixing all dough ingredients together in bowl. Set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°.
  3. Prepare the filling by heating coconut oil at medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic. Sautee until translucent. Turn heat down, add kale, tamari, salt and pepper and stir until kale wilts.
  4. Place parchment paper on baking sheet. Use a rolling pin to flatten dough into a large circle on the baking sheet, about 1/4″ thick.
  5. Spread kale mixture over dough. Fold edges in over kale, using hands to pinch edges.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes. Serve warm and drizzle with tahini.

  1. Last night a girl brought kale chips to class and everyone agreed that it was the only way they could eat kale! I was shocked – I love it every way. This savory tart looks like another great way I’d enjoy it!

  2. This looked amazing and i tried it but the quantity came out really small, does 3/4 of flour really get to 2 large servings? My dough was really crumbly as well so it must be a difference in our GF flour blends. Thanks anyway and i do enjoy reading your blog 🙂

  3. I really enjoyed this recipe. My partner has MS so I replaced the coconut oil for grape seed oil and used Braggs Liquid Aminos instead of Tamari. It was delicious thank you very much!
