Hippysauce Toast Spread+ Veganish Book Giveaway!

As funny as this may sound, I don’t actually have a lot of vegan friends.

I’ve been full-fledged vegan for over 7 years now and I can count the amount of vegan friends I’ve had over the years on one hand.  That said, I do have lots of friends who consider themselves vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, etc, and I’m happy to say that I know tons of people who have recently become interested in adding more plant-based dishes to their diet (yay!). Even my dad, a true “meat and potatoes” man, has been recently starting substituting olive oil for butter and adding a few other veggies in with his taters.

In my opinion, every little step helps and even the smallest food swaps can add up to a big difference. That’s why I was super excited when Mielle Chénier-Cowan Rose’s new book Veganish: The Omnivore’s Guide to Plant-Based Cooking showed up in my mailbox. The book details how to make everything from Spicy BBQ Potato Salad to Chicken Fried Tofu to Chocolate Truffles using whole food, plant-based ingredients and gives suggestions for “omnivorous variations.” It’s the perfect resource for people transitioning to vegetarianism or veganism or families of people with multiple dietary preferences who want to eat the same thing for dinner.

There are so many tasty-sounding recipes in the book but the one that stood out to me first was the Hippysauce Toast Spread. While it may look like regular peanut butter in the photos, this sauce is anything but ordinary. It’s salty, sweet and spicy and when I made for Ross (my omnivorous bf) and myself for an afternoon snack his reaction was, “Woah! That’s good toast!”

Oh and did I mention we’re giving away a copy of the book? To enter to win, leave a comment on the post or share the link on Facebook, twitter, or Instagram (make sure to tag me so I see it!). One winner will be randomly selected next Monday. Ok, let’s get to the toast!

  1. Gosh looking at the ingredients, it sounds delicious! Love the idea! I’ve been so sick, prone to illness and infection like the plague 🙁 So I’m in the process of rebalancing my gut and as a result I am slowly transitioning to veganism to help clear my body from toxins. It has been a painful 3 months of being ill and I am desperately trying to heal my body through a good diet. The problem is that I can’t include many foods in my diet, which has made life quite difficult. I have been struggling to find good, quick and easy vegan recipes to help me transition. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I can easily substitute the honey for liquid Stevia. Sure the taste won’t be the same but with the other spices, this is the perfect accompaniment to gluten free bread! Plus coconut oil is a major anti-fungal! So glad I came across your site Ilene! Really need the help to heal! 🙂

  2. This sounds like it would be perfect for my omni parents, who are slightly baffled by vegan diet. The whole introductory section sounds like a wonderful source of even-handed information.

  3. Chicken-fried tofu!!! I’m drooling!!! Thanks for sharing this book, I’m half way thru my ‘Oh She Glows’ cookbook so I’m excited to try a new one!

  4. I’m the same way! Vegan for over7 years but only have a handful of vega friends, though all my omni friends and family are very open to trying my vegan cooking and exploring new foods. We are all a group of foodies and chefs 🙂
This would be great for my parents who have gone from very traditional steak eating argentines to at least bring open to meatless meals and different ethnic cuisines. I’d love to share these recipes with them!
And I also making this spread ASAP!

  5. Wow what a good twist on nut butter! I am always looking for good recipes I’m my life that I can make dairy and gluten free so this sounds right up my ally!

  6. I love that this utilizes so many powerhouse spices all together! Hippysauce is the best name for it, yay! As for the book, that sounds unbeliveably amazing as well. :0)

  7. This book sounds like just what I need! I have been thinking about how to transition to a partly vegan diet recently. I could really use this!

  8. This book sounds great! I’m all about sweet+savory, and am ALWAYS all about nut butters. I actually tried one recently that was a blend of sunbutter and peanut butter and spiced with curry spices. Kind of like peanut sauce, but straight nut butter and spreadable? Delicious.

  9. Mielle makes the most delicious food! I have her first cookbook “Piece of my Heart” and I love that thing! There are so many wonderful recipes, but just as great, if not better are the techniques she has – somethings I would have never known about before (ex: soaking raw garlic in an acid before adding to dips or emulsifying oil… )! I highly recommend it!

  10. I would love a copy of your book! And as an old hippy myself, I love the name of your spread! Health issues are forcing me to focus on a more plant-based diet, and this book sounds like it would be a good resource in that endeavor.
